In 1982, when the Torino Film Festival was created, it was called Festival Internazionale Cinema Giovani. Its goal was to study innovative and experimental forms of national and international cinema, a new type of cinema that was “young” and in contrast to more consolidated forms of filmmaking.
Right from the start, the festival was a great success, in part thanks to its aperture toward arthouse films and its historic retrospectives of highly experimental films.
During the 1980s and ‘90s, the festival gained even more prestige on an international level. And in 1997, the festival’s full maturity was sanctioned by a new name: the Torino Film Festival.
The TFF, which is now directed by Gianni Amelio, is very much in the eye of the media and the public, yet its prestige remains unchanged with sector insiders and film aficionados, who carefully follow the international competition and the non-competitive sections which offer some of the most significant film reflections of the year.
